Geri Gventer was born in Brooklyn and has spent her entire life near the Atlantic Ocean. Geri received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York. At Pratt Institute, also in Brooklyn she majored in sculpture with a minor in art history and received her Maser of Fine Arts in 1982.
For the past 40 years Geri has been sculpting, painting and teaching at her studio in Brooklyn and is a member of the Atlantic Gallery in the Chelsea area of NYC. She has had several exhibitions and group shows and also teaches painting and sculpting to a diversified population. Currently she holds the position of ‘Artist In Residence’ for the Oceania Cruise Lines.
With her education, research and extensive travels throughout Mexico and South America she has gained an insight and appreciation of Latin American artists. The Pre-Columbian, Mayan and African cultures have greatly influenced her work because of their depiction of the politics and values of the time through spiritual and mythological themes. On the many Oceania cruises Geri’s beautifully illustrated keynote presentations focus on the most influential artists in the countries being visited. These are artists who had a great impact on the development of modern art in Latin America whose outstanding contributions are honored with the museums dedicated to their work. As part of her onboard art classes Geri incorporates the history of the particular artistic style being taught.
When at home Geri teaches art in various senior centers which has led to her involvement with the aging members of the community. In addition, she petitions, protests and speaks out for the welfare of dogs and their acceptance as being an integral part of our society. A dominant theme in Geri's art is the relationships of people and their animal companions. Her sculptures and paintings are like stage sets in which these themes are expressed. The clay or canvas is like a piece of slate where her impressions of events and feelings are inscribed.
She lives in Brooklyn with her husband Mark and beloved Cocker Spaniel, Simon in our memories as well as his partner Lucy and soon to be new family member Freddie.
